The current constitution

Scotland’s chance to make history

After their encouraging draw with England, Scotland have a realistic chance of making it to the knockout stage of a major tournament for the first time ever. Victory would take them to four points and virtually guarantee progressions, either as group runners up or one of the best third place teams.

It won’t be easy against a talented Croatian side, but Steve Clarke’s men proved at Wembley that they can compete with the top teams. One area where the Scots urgently need to improve is in front of goal. They have registered 30 attempts on goal so far, but are still looking for their first goal.

Last hurrah for Croatia’s Golden Generation

Croatia face exactly the same scenario as Scotland on Tuesday evening. Win and they almost certainly go through, any other result will see them make an early exit.

This has not been a vintage tournament for the Croatians so far, they were poor in defeat to England and fortune to get a draw against the Czech Republic. It is looking increasingly clear that the squad which reached the last World Cup final is coming to the end of its Golden Generation. That being said, any side featuring players of the calibre of Luka Modric and Ivan Perisic is still capable of beating anyone on their day.

Head to Head

The two sides have met five times before and Scotland are yet to be beaten. Their last encounter was a World Cup qualifier in 2013. On that occasion, goals from Robert Snodgrass and Steven Naismith gave Scotland a 2-0 win. Snodgrass was also on the scoresheet when Scotland won 0-1 in Zagreb during the same qualification campaign.

Prior to that, all three games between the sides end in draws. Overall, the five games between the sides have only produced seven goals, so it could be a tight affair on Tuesday evening.

Our Betting Tip for Today

After weighing up all of the available information, our Euro 2020 prediction today is that Croatia will beat Scotland.

Scotland to fall short again

Based on their performances so far, this looks like a close matchup. The big problem for Scotland is that Croatia still have a couple of world class players in their midst, who could prove to be the difference.

Furthermore, the talented midfielder Billy Gilmour has been ruled out for the Scots after a positive coronavirus test. His absence could lead to Luca Modric and Mateo Kovacic taking a stranglehold of the midfield. Scotland’s lack of goals is also a worry – Lyndon Dykes and Che Adams have worked hard but rarely looked like finding the net.

The bookies have Croatia as slight favourites and we are inclined to agree. This is a Croatian side on the decline, but they should have enough in the tank to edge out the Scots and progress to the last 16.
